Family Dollar will begin selling alcohol

Dollar Tree will begin selling alcohol at approximately 1,000 Family Dollar stores in an effort to help the struggling chain. The Virginia-based company announced plans to begin selling alcoholic beverages at the locations this week, saying it will also expand freezers and coolers in about 400 Family Dollar stores this year. During the first quarter, alcoholic drinks were added to approximately 45 stores and freezers and coolers were expanded in 55 stores, the company said. Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar in 2015 and has faced sluggish sales since. The company, which typically closes about 75 stores per year, expects to close as many as 390 locations this fiscal year. It also plans to rebrand about 200 Family Dollar stores to the Dollar Tree brand. SOURCE
